Lighting Calm at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026
20th May 2026
The Asthma + Lung UK Breathing Space Garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026 was designed as a place of pause; a calm, restorative environment encouraging visitors to slow down, reflect and reconnect with nature.
Awarded Silver at this year’s show, the garden brought together landscape design, planting and lighting in a carefully balanced composition intended to support wellbeing through subtle sensory experience.
LightGraphix was delighted to support the project, supplying all the exterior lighting in collaboration with Angus Thompson Design and dpa Lighting Consultants.
The lighting strategy was intentionally understated from the outset. Rather than drawing attention to the fittings themselves, the scheme focused on atmosphere, texture and gentle guidance through the space after dark.
As outlined within the lighting concept developed by dpa Lighting Consultants, the scheme was designed to “blend seamlessly into the environment”, using discreet lighting interventions to support the tranquillity of the garden while minimising glare and visual clutter.
Warm 2700K lighting was carefully integrated throughout the space using concealed linear lighting, recessed uplighting and miniature spotlights to softly accentuate key landscape features including sculptural pine trees, natural stone, timber detailing and perimeter textures.
By day, the fittings quietly disappear into the landscape. By evening, the lighting gently extends the atmosphere of the garden — creating a space to breathe and contemplate at any moment of the day or night.
Particular attention was given to concealment and restraint:
- discreet uplighting to feature trees and sculpture
- concealed linear lighting integrated beneath benches and around level changes
- low glare recessed uplights within perimeter niches
- carefully controlled illumination to minimise light pollution
The result is a scheme where the experience of the garden remains the focus, reinforcing LightGraphix’s belief that exterior lighting should enhance architecture and landscape with subtlety and precision.
The project also carries an important legacy beyond Chelsea. Following the show, the garden will live on as a permanent installation at Asthma + Lung UK headquarters, extending its purpose and impact beyond the event itself.
